This was me a little over three years ago when a close friend introduced me to essential oils. It could not have come at a better time and, looking back on it, was just meant to be. I was a few years into a natural wellness journey that began after being diagnosed with hypothyroidism, adrenal burnout, and hormone imbalances. I was working with a naturopath after searching for a doctor who would finally listen to me when I said that I didn’t feel fine no matter what my labs said. I just wanted to feel better using something other than prescription pills.
In the years since I have woven essential oils into all aspects of my daily life. They have replaced many conventional self care and household cleaning products with questionable ingredients, candles and perfumes with synthetic scents, and made my home and life a better, healthier place.
I never set out to get into the business of talking about and selling essential oils. For the past 3+ years I have bought them for myself and for those who are interested in trying them. I've talked about them a little bit and used them around friends and family and that was it. But they have become such a big part of my life and overall health that I've decided to start spreading the word about oils, how I use them, and how they have benefited me.
Recently this same friend interviewed me for her TestimoniOILS youtube channel (check it out here if you want to watch!), which got me thinking about a blog post discussing my favorite, everyday essential oils.
To start off, essential oils can be used in three different ways: 1 - inhaled (you can use a diffuser for this), 2 - taken internally (using veggie capsule or by putting drops on your tongue, though not all oils can be taken internally), and 3 - absorbed through the skin. These days I use them all 3 ways, though as a beginner I mostly inhaled them and rubbed them on my skin (sometimes diluted with lotion or a carrier oil).
So if you were interested in trying out essential oils, where would you start? If someone were to ask me my main go-to oils for everyday use I would say the ones below.
Lavender - Lavender oil smells heavenly and is known for its calming and relaxing qualities, which is why it is my go-to oil to use right before bed. Every night I use a roll-on with lavender and fractionated coconut oil on the bottoms of my feet. I rub in the oil and then inhale the scent leftover on my hands. This little nightly ritual signals to my body that it’s time to go to bed. Lavender also helps soothe skin irritations. I rub it on cuts and scrapes to help them heal faster.
Lemon - Lemon water anyone? Instead of buying and cutting up lemons for my water every week, which is just messy and involves too many seeds, I go straight to the purest source, lemon oil. Lemon is a versatile oil that can be used to cleanse the body (by adding to water or tea like I do) and used as a non-toxic cleaner for your home. Lemon is one of the oils that I add to my homemade all-surface cleaning solution. It is also uplifting and energizing when diffused into the air.
Peppermint - I rub a little peppermint oil on both temples to help ease a headache and put on the back of my neck when I’m tired and need a little boost. Peppermint is great to use when you have an upset tummy or any digestive discomfort. I also use peppermint as mouthwash after a meal and before bed (add one drop to tongue, swish around with some water, then swallow). A drop of peppermint rubbed on the belly also helps to soothe the bloating that I experience often.
Frankincense - Frankincense is often called the “king of oils” and can be used for a lot of different things. I take it internally daily via veggie capsule to promote overall health and cellular function. It also has properties that help it to rejuvenate skin and reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines (add a drop to your face lotion!). When inhaled, Frankincense’s aroma helps promote feelings of peace, relaxation, satisfaction, and wellness.
Tea Tree (Melaleuca) - You’ve probably heard of tea tree oil before as it is used in a lot of personal care products. It is known for its purifying qualities, so is great to use on your skin (I mainly use as a spot treatment on hormonal acne), on your household surfaces (this one is also in my homemade all-surface cleaning solution), or diffused to help purify and freshen the air.
Essential oils have become an invaluable part of my wellness routine. They sit on my bedside table to use as soon as I wake up (and before I go to sleep), in my bathroom as I get ready for my day, on my desk at work, and I carry a handful of bottles for use on the go if I happen to need something (great for the occasional headache or stomach ache). These days I also make a lot of my own DIY products using essential oils as a base instead of buying things. Recipes abound on the Internet if this is something you would be interested in trying.
