One of the keys to consistent use of essential oils is having them with you in your purse or bag and keeping them in convenient locations throughout your home. That way they are there when you need them! If they are stored out of sight you won’t think to use them and regular, daily use will help you to reap all of the health benefits that essential oils provide.
If you’ve ever been to my house you will notice that I keep essential oils in pretty much every room, from my kitchen and family room to my bathroom cabinet and nightstand. I also keep a little essential oil travel bag with me at all times containing a handful of my favorites that I use daily.
So what are these favorites that I like to keep on hand?
Lavender: Lavender is one of the oils that I use most. It has a relaxing effect on the mind and body, so I grab it in stressful situations and when I just need a moment to chill. All it takes is a few inhales straight from the bottle to help me feel better. Lavender is also great for occasional skin irritations, such as bug bites and minor cuts, scrapes, and burns. Rub a drop on the desired area (dilute if you have sensitive skin) and you will feel some much needed relief!
Peppermint: Peppermint’s scent is naturally uplifting and I combine it with wild orange (below) every afternoon for a mental boost. I also use it daily to freshen my breath after eating (add 1 drop to a small glass of water and drink, swishing around in your mouth briefly before you swallow). It’s also great to have on hand to deal with headaches (massage into temples) and belly aches (massage onto stomach). It’s a strong oil so one drop will normally do the trick! Dilute with a carrier oil if your skin is sensitive.
Wild Orange: Wild orange is my favorite citrus oil. It’s scent is so refreshing and uplifting, especially now during the winter months when it is cold and dreary outside. I diffuse this oil often and combine with peppermint every afternoon for a mental boost. Place one drop of each oil in the palm of your hand, rub your hands together, and then inhale deeply 3-4 times. Then rub on the back of your neck.
Digestzen: Digestzen, doTERRA’s digestive blend, contains oils known to aid with healthy digestion, including peppermint, ginger, fennel, and coriander. I struggle with a few digestive disorders and food sensitivities, so my stomach gets upset on the regular. A few drops of this blend either rubbed on my stomach or taken internally with a small glass of water help me tremendously.
Elevation: doTERRa’s joyful blend, Elevation is one of my absolute favorites. I love to diffuse it when I’m feeling down and often apply it to my wrists and neck to use as a perfume. It contains many different oils, including lavender, tangerine, clary sage, ylang ylang, and melissa.
Breathe: doTERRA’s respiratory blend is a must-have to during the winter months when colds are common. It helps to promote the feeling of clear airways. I inhale directly from the bottle if I need a quick pick-me-up or add to my diffuser. I also rub on my chest and my sinuses to provide extra relief if needed. This is also a strong oil so only a drop is needed and dilute with a carrier oil if your skin is sensitive.
OnGuard: doTERRA’s protective blend is also a must-have during cold and flu season. It helps to protect the body from season threats. I diffuse in the office if I hear my co-workers around me coughing and sniffling. I also add a few drops when wiping down the kitchen and bathroom counters. When I’m feeling that tell-tale itch in the back of my throat I put two drops on my tongue and wash down with some water.
Remember, with essential oils, less is more! They are very powerful so apply topically with a carrier oil if you have sensitive skin.
