Hello and happy Friday friends! We made it to the weekend!
One of my goals for the new year is blogging/writing more regularly. It’s something I have gotten away from over the past few years for various reasons that I really want to get back to. Writing has always brought me so much joy and helps me to organize and work through all of the thoughts that float around in my head every day. It also gets my creative juices flowing; when I write, more ideas just seem to come to me naturally than when I’m not.
Since I’ve been away for such a long time I thought it would be fun to share answers to ten questions about myself and how I strive to live a healthy, balanced life. I’m also planning to pose these questions to some others who I have met on my healthy journey and share those with you in the future as well. I hope you enjoy!
Where do you live? Right outside Washington, D.C. in Northern Virginia
What do you do for a living? I am currently a CPA (certified public accountant) and an am account manager. BUT my ultimate dream is to educate others about nutrition and healthy living (see #7 below for more details on this!).
What are three words those closest to you would use to describe you? I would say caring, thoughtful, and intelligent
What is one personality trait you have that isn’t your favorite and how do you work to overcome that? I have always been a perfectionist who wants to do her absolute best in everything that she does. But this trait has held me back at times and prevented me from really pursuing my dreams. Because if it’s not perfect it’s not worth doing right? WRONG! It is something I have to work on every day to overcome. As one of my friends has told me, perfection prohibits progress. This could not be more true.
What tools do you use to balance the main stressors in your life? Stress is something I have to keep in check every day as I struggle with mild adrenal fatigue and have suffered from adrenal burnout in the past. Stress is no joke! My main coping mechanisms are daily meditation, making sure I sleep enough, listening to music that I love, and using essential oils. The scent from essential oils has a direct impact on the limbic system in our brain, which governs our memories and emotions. Scents that are associated with positive memories can have such a profound effect on our mood. I love the smell of fir trees since it reminds me of going to get our Christmas tree with my dad when I was little. Citrus scents remind me of the warmth of the sun and lavender reminds me of the comfort of a warm, soft bed. I keep essential oils with me at all times to help me deal with the daily stresses of life.
What is your main tip for staying on top of your game every day? Making sure that I get adequate levels of sleep. Sleep is one of the most important things you can do for your health. Our bodies do so much repair and maintenance while we are asleep! I feel like this is often the one people cut corners on the most. I notice such a big difference in my demeanor if I don’t get enough sleep. I can be pretty hard to deal with when sleep deprived! Everyone has different sleep needs, but I strive to get at least seven to nine hours a night. I wear earplugs and use a sleep mask as well, which have both helped to improve the quality of my sleep.
What are your life dreams? My dream career is to be a nutrition and health coach, guiding others to become the healthiest and happiest versions of themselves. I have seen the difference a healthy diet has had in my personal health and know that it could be life-changing for so many. There is just a knowledge-gap to narrow and people just need some guidance and hand holding. In February I am starting a course to become a certified Nutritional Therapy Practitioner through the Nutritional Therapy Association. I could not be more excited about this new path and the opportunities that it will unfold.
How do you balance your daily responsibilities? We all have so much on our plates and only so many hours in a day. I am naturally a pretty organized person so keep lists, but if I don’t cross off all of my to-do’s I don’t beat myself up about it. I adjust my plan for the next day and go from there. I prioritize the most important things and accept that some days I’m just not going to be able to do it all.
What do you do just for YOU every day? I think setting aside some time just for you, no matter how busy you are, is so important for long term health and happiness. I am a morning person so have built a morning routine that I do before anyone else in the house is awake. It grounds me and helps me get ready for my day. I’ll provide more details on my morning routine in a blog post soon, but the main things I do are seated meditation and breath work, yoga sun salutations, drink tea, and aromatically use essential oils.
What foods are you craving these days? I go through some serious phases with food cravings. Recently I was all about salads, but these days I’m loving oatmeal, white rice, and dark chocolate/peanut butter combined together.
If you have any questions for me please ask away in the comments below! I’ll be happy to answer. :)
