Essential Oil Must-Haves for Cold Season

We’ve been battling cold season in our house for the past week. Slight correction, my boyfriend was battling a bad cold and I was taking care of him. I had some minor symptoms a few days ago but have felt fine ever since, so at this point think I am safely out of the woods. My secret sauce to avoiding flu-like symptoms, achiness, and the general yuckiness that comes with feeling under the weather? A healthy diet, adequate sleep, and essential oils.

Speak to anyone who regularly uses therapeutic grade essential oils and they will say the exact same thing - that their overall health has dramatically improved since starting to use them and that both them and their family members don’t get sick as often as they used to.

So what oils do I use to support my immune system and always have on hand for when a cold strikes? A handful of these I take internally in a veggie cap daily (1-2 drops each) to support my overall health as well, which I have identified.

  • Breathe: doTERRA’s respiratory blend is a must-have to during the winter months when colds are common. It helps to promote the feeling of clear airways. I inhale directly from the bottle if I need a quick pick-me-up or add to my diffuser. I also rub on my chest and my sinuses to provide extra relief if needed. This is also a strong oil so only a drop is needed and dilute with a carrier oil if your skin is sensitive. Not for internal use.

  • OnGuard: doTERRA’s protective blend is also a must-have during cold and flu season. It helps to protect the body from seasonal threats and supports healthy immune function*. I diffuse in the office if I hear my co-workers around me coughing and sniffling. When feeling sick I take a few drops internally in a veggie cap 3 times per day (upon waking, mid-day, before bed). I take this oil internally every day to support my overall health.

  • OnGuard Protecting Throat Drops: OnGuard blend in a cough drop, yes please! No added sugars here, these all natural throat drops are made with organic cane juice and brown rice syrup. It will help soothe scratchy throats and strengthen the body’s natural defenses. And they taste good to boot!

  • Frankincense: Commonly called the “king of oils”, Frankincense is a powerhouse that supports overall health. When taken internally it can help support healthy cellular and immune, nervous, and digestive system function*. When feeling sick I take a few drops internally in a veggie cap 3 times per day (upon waking, mid-day, before bed). I take this oil internally every day to support my overall health.

  • Copaiba: A powerful antioxidant that helps to promote immune health*, Copaiba is an oil that I always have on hand. Taken internally, Copaiba essential oil supports the health of the cardiovascular, immune, digestive, nervous, and respiratory systems*. When feeling sick I take a few drops internally in a veggie cap 3 times per day (upon waking, mid-day, before bed). I take this oil internally every day to support my overall health.

  • Oregano: Not just an herb for cooking, oregano is a powerful essential oil that contains carvacrol, a phenol that possess antioxidant properties when ingested. It is a strong oil, so use caution when using and always dilute if applying topically. Oregano supports healthy digestion, respiratory function, and the immune system when taken internally*. I only use oregano oil when I’m not feeling well; 1 drop in a veggie cap 3 times per day (upon waking, mid-day, before bed).

These oils are my main arsenal for fighting bugs that come my way, along with sleep, rest, and herbal tea.
